Cluster cautiously optimistic for industry

MEANINGFUL MACHINES The demand for locally manufactured and distributed mining machinery in South Africa continues to drive optimism in the sector

Based on the resilience of local manufacturers, and the historical and continued importance of mining in the South African economy, domestic equipment manufacturer cluster Mining Equipment Manufacturers of South Africa (Memsa) is cautiously optimistic for 2026, says Memsa interim CEO Juliana Makapan.

“As global demand for critical minerals accelerates in support of the energy transition, we expect renewed investment in mining projects across the region, creating opportunities for locally manufactured equipment and services,” she says.

Makapan adds that Southern Africa remains a globally significant mining region, underpinned by sustained demand for mining equipment, particularly in deep-level mining, as well as mechanisation, safety and equipment designed for harsh and complex operating conditions.

From a manufacturing perspective, she says the outlook for 2026 will be shaped by three key trends, the first being an increased recognition by mining companies, government and financiers of the strategic importance of local sourcing, which will drive localisation and supply chain resilience.

“Memsa expects stronger momentum around localisation, supplier development and local-content commitments, provided these are consistently implemented and supported by enabling policies and procurement practices,” adds Makapan.

Demand for technology, innovation and modernisation is the second trend.

South Africa’s original-equipment manufacturers (OEMs) are well positioned to supply high-value, specialised equipment, including automation-ready machinery, digital monitoring systems, energy efficient solutions and equipment that improves productivity, safety and environmental performance.

“Innovation will remain a key differentiator for local manufacturers competing . . . domestically and in export markets,” she adds.

Makapan expects mining investment across Africa – the third trend – to present significant growth potential.

Memsa members are, therefore, encouraged to focus on regional integration and export readiness, supported by initiatives such as the African Continental Free Trade Area, provided that trade barriers are addressed, she avers.

However, infrastructure constraints, energy security, access to finance, policy uncertainty and cost competitiveness remain critical issues that must be addressed to unlock the sector’s full potential, states Makapan. Thus, collaboration among industry, government, mining companies and development finance institutions will be essential.

Research, Development and Innovation

The Mandela Mining Precinct (MMP) notes that while its research, development and innovation (RDI) efforts focus on extraction; safety; environmental, social and governance considerations; and production and cost-efficiencies, a part of its mandate is to support the capacity of the local mining supply chain and respond to industry needs.

“Through our long-standing relationship with Memsa, 2026 will see improved integration that will support Memsa manufacturers to add value to the industry by providing the opportunities to translate our RDI under the South African Mining Extraction RDI strategy,” says MMP director Julie Courtnage.

She adds that this strategy prioritises mining modernisation and “real, deployable” technologies.

MMP convenes researchers, universities and mining houses to generate new insights, while Memsa connects these innovations with manufacturers and buyers. This fundamentally supports the localisation drive, including capacity development in local OEMs.

Further, the evolution of the Mining Technology Availability and Resource database – a joint initiative between Memsa and the MMP – will help to inform industry, and even government departments, about which technologies and equipment are available to market and enable developers to potentially leverage innovation funding.

“The MMP-Memsa collaboration in 2026 will help to build an integrated mining innovation ecosystem where research, manufacturing and market access are interconnected,” affirms Courtnage.

Manufacturing Challenges Mitigated

To ease some of the challenges that the manufacturing sector faces, Memsa works as a collective industry voice and catalyst for action, through engagement with government, mining companies and regulators, to advocate for clear localisation and supplier development frameworks that “translate policy intent into procurement reality”.

“Additionally, to diversify demand beyond the domestic market, Memsa coordinates focused market access initiatives, including trade missions, exhibitions and regional export platforms,” says specialist engineering firm JA Engineering Works CEO and Memsa chairperson Matimba Mahange.
