PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Construction of ASX-listed Australian Vanadium’s vanadium electrolyte facility, in Western Australia, has started, with engineering firm Primero Group appointed to construct the facility.

At this facility, US partner US Vanadium’s (USV) proven electrolyte manufacturing technology would be deployed, with Australian Vanadium targeting the production of up to 33 MWh/y of vanadium redox flow battery high-purity electrolyte.

Until production of vanadium oxides from Australian Vanadium’s Midwest Processing Hub starts, vanadium oxide feedstock for the electrolyte facility will be sourced through the company’s agreement with US Vanadium.

“It is satisfying to see the progress being achieved by the team as Australian Vanadium’s vanadium electrolyte manufacturing plant starts to take shape. Using US Vanadium’s proven electrolyte manufacturing technology, Australian Vanadium aims to become a trusted supplier of vanadium electrolyte within Australia and beyond,” said CEO Graham Arvidson.

Meanwhile, the company has also appointed Simon Rough to manage the facility through construction and into production.

“We are pleased to have welcomed Rough onboard to manage the facility and work with the existing team, utilising in-house electrolyte knowledge and relationships that have been built with companies such as USV and VFB manufacturers. The implementation of the electrolyte plant provides an ideal opportunity for Australian Vanadium to put into practice, test and further mature its system, processes and management systems that will ultimately underpin the larger Australian vanadium project.”

Australian Vanadium is aiming to produce its first vanadium electrolyte for commercial use by November this year, and is working on offtake agreements for the product.
