The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) will be present at the South African Pavilion, with the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy, at the 2025 Investing in African Mining Indaba, taking place at the Cape Town International Convention Centre this week.

As an entity of the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI), the CSIR says it seeks to bring a selection of unique capabilities and innovations borne from modern Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies such as virtual reality, digital twinning, cyberthreat detection, additive manufacturing and metallurgical techniques to the Indaba.

This includes multi-modal, integrative software ecosystems as a backbone for control rooms; the digital rock engineering assistant that safeguards the integrity of data in mines; and the trackless mobile machine system, which simulates on-site traffic to optimise routing and prevent vehicle collision.

Photonics experts will show homegrown laser-based tools for refurbishing components, aimed at preventing costly replacement and downtime.

Additionally, from the metallurgy sector, the CSIR is revealing the capabilities of a newly established hot isostatic press facility recently acquired through the DSTI.

A team from the CSIR will be present at the event and will participate in various panel discussions, sharing insights and contributing to the industry dialogue on the future of mining.

The CSIR leverages multidisciplinary teams and laboratory infrastructure to offer solutions to high-impact industries such as mining, aiming to support the sector in advancing efficient, safe, and sustainable mining practices and operations.
