Cutifani to step down as Vale Base Metals chair
Vale Base Metals (VBM) said on Wednesday that Mark Cutifani would step down as chairperson of the board in July, with Vale CEO Gustavo Pimenta appointed as his successor.
Cutifani, the inaugural chairperson of VBM following its carve-out from Vale, is stepping down to focus on new professional projects, the company said.
As chairperson, Cutifani helped guide the company’s early development, overseeing the formation of its leadership team, portfolio optimisation, and the establishment of a strategic partnership with Manara Minerals in 2023.
"I'd like to acknowledge Gustavo and Vale for the trust in navigating this transformation, and particularly acknowledge Shaun and the Base Metals team for the great work done and the exciting future they are creating," Cutifani said.
"I look forward to maintaining a strong relationship with the team as technical work continues from the asset review."
Pimenta, already a VBM board member, will bring leadership continuity and alignment with Vale SA’s broader strategic priorities in the energy transition metals space, the company said.
“He was instrumental in my decision to join the company and his principle-driven approach, deep industry knowledge, vast networks and broad experience in everything from operations to projects to sustainability to innovation have been invaluable in shaping the transformation we have embarked upon at VBM," said VBM CEO Shaun Usmar.
