Heavy-duty centrifugal pump manufacturer Schurco Slurry is prioritising the inclusion of comprehensive dewatering pump solutions in its product range to mitigate the challenges that the mining industry is facing.

This endeavour will result in a wider spectrum of applications for the sector, with the company “working tirelessly” to improve its stock levels of dewatering pumps, while continuously striving to reach on-time-delivery key performance indicator targets.

A commitment to research and development ensures that all pump parts are rigorously engineered and performance-tested to meet the highest equipment-manufacturing standards, says Schurco Slurry sales executive Gerrit Duvenhage.

“This dedication to quality control and continuous improvement translates into reliable and cost-effective solutions for the mining industry.”

In terms of fostering innovation, Schurco Slurry highlights technology as a key catalyst in the improved performance of slurry pumps.

The company contends that research will, therefore, be essential to the ongoing development of its slurry pumps, as it allows for lower operational costs, enhanced efficiency and improved overall durability to meet the evolving requirements of clients, and the regulatory requirements in various industries.

Duvenhage explains that all Schurco Slurry’s pump parts have been rigorously reverse-engineered using robust technology with two- and three-dimensional modelling, in addition to all pump impellers undergoing performance testing to certify them against original-equipment manufacturer performance indicators.

Challenges, Opportunities, Projects

Duvenhage notes that clogging can disrupt the normal operation of a pump, potentially damaging the internal components or even destroying the entire pumping unit, while high wear rates typically affect the impeller and internal liners.

Unplanned downtime at any operational site can also lead to significant production losses, resulting in substantial financial setbacks, he adds.

To identify such problems early, Schurco Slurry emphasises the importance of preventive and regular maintenance, as well as planned inspections of equipment.

The company supports mining clients by taking proactive steps to reduce wear by selecting customised materials for specific operational applications. This approach enhances the durability of pumps and reduces reliance on spare parts.

For example, parameters such as inlet velocity, can significantly accelerate wear, says Duvenhage, who notes that this challenge can be mitigated by choosing the correct equipment for a specific application.

The company stresses the importance of selecting the correct pump materials to not only ensure efficient operation, but also extend their life span.

“The incorrect selection and sizing of slurry pumps could be detrimental to mining operations. Schurco Slurry emphasises the importance of quality control throughout the manufacturing process, which includes selecting the right alloy to match the specific application of the pumping system,” he explains.

This approach ensures that engineering tolerances and precision are maintained, with the company also dedicating significant resources to ongoing personnel training and development. This also ensures that its teams select and apply the appropriate slurry pumps based on specific application needs while integrating the latest technological advancements into future pump designs.

However, Duvenhage adds that the current global economic landscape is an open invitation for Schurco Slurry to embark on a cost-saving initiative for clients.

Forming partnerships with its clients, investigating certain pump applications and conducting regular audits remain key strategic considerations for the company.

In addition, Schurco Slurry continues to innovate by using different materials for various applications, thereby providing solutions for various challenges in mineral processing facilities.

Schurco Slurry has been distributing across South Africa and globally for 49 years, maintaining a large inventory of pumps and parts. The company aims to ensure the consistent availability and interchangeability of efficient slurry pump parts, as and when required by pump operators.

This global distribution network is supported by comprehensive refurbishing programmes and bearing assembly exchange or repair options that reduce downtime and increase operational efficiency for mining operations.

Meanwhile, Duvenhage notes that clients and other slurry pump operators will soon see the introduction of augmented reality pump models from Schurco Slurry, providing a real-time, interactive experience for clients.

The company has also launched its new South Africa-centric website, whereby Schurco Slurry will provide product-specific information relevant to the region and surrounding areas.
