The integration of advanced technology, and precise customisation in mine dewatering and water treatment applications, not only contribute to efficiency and versatility, but present a practical asset to operations across diverse applications, improving water quality, preventing clogging and supporting sustainable water management.
Specifically designed for cleaning process water ponds, return water dams and other water storage areas, pumps and dredging specialist IPR’s SlurrySucker dredging system is playing a “pivotal” role in helping mining operations achieve this environmental sustainability, says business development manager Ruaan Venter, who adds that the dredging system is “a highly effective solution in dewatering and water treatment applications”.
Recognised as an “ideal solution” for mining operations, the SlurrySucker resolves silt accumulation issues, safeguarding water capacity and quality, which results in optimised water management, increased storage capacity and reduced risks of flooding or structural damage.
In addition, by enhancing environmental sustainability and water body efficiency, Venter explains that the SlurrySucker contributes to benefits such as cleaner ecosystems, healthier aquatic life and reduced ecological damage.
“This also positively impacts on the reputation of organisations with a commitment to environmental stewardship, especially those in mining. In addition to the environmental benefits, operational efficiency translates to reduced downtime and higher productivity,” he adds.
In this regard, IPR’s SlurrySucker MK III system, which uses Toyo heavy-duty slurry pumps, is considered “one of the most efficient and cost-effective electrically powered floating dredge systems in the market”, says Venter, who adds that the system helps improve environmental footprints and maintains the operational efficiency of bodies of water such as ponds, lagoons, dams and canals.
The Toyo slurry pumps are designed to perform well in challenging environments, he explains.
The pumps offer enhanced performance in handling various slurry types, including those with high specific gravity and larger particles.
“This ensures that the SlurrySucker MK III can efficiently remove a wide range of sediments, improving the overall effectiveness of the system,” Venter notes.
Further, the durability and reliability of the Toyo slurry pumps contribute to an extended operational life span for the SlurrySucker MK III system, resulting in reduced downtime and maintenance costs, aligning with sustainable dredging practices.
The Toyo slurry pumps also reduce environmental impact by releasing less sediments and contaminants into water bodies, ensuring water quality and ecosystem health.
The pump’s cost-effective operation, versatility and improved safety enhance the overall efficiency of the dredging operation, Venter says.
Customisation options make the SlurrySucker adaptable to specific slurry removal requirements, providing customised solutions, improved sediment removal efficiency and reduced material waste.
Venter adds that IPR's experienced team plays a pivotal role in evaluating distinct application needs, proposing practical solutions such as pumping material with a high solids ratio to nearby reservoirs or using geotextile bags for containment of unwanted material.
This expertise ensures effective use of the SlurrySucker system in diverse scenarios, addressing logistical challenges and reducing environmental impact, ultimately leading to more sustainable and cost-efficient operations, Venter concludes.
