DSV celebrates the addition of six electric trucks to its road fleet in South Africa

DSV is proud to announce another major milestone in its sustainability journey with the addition of six Volvo FM 4x2 electric trucks to its fleet in South Africa. This announcement follows the successful launch of the company’s first 8-ton electric truck in November and reinforces DSV’s ongoing commitment to reducing carbon emissions and delivering more sustainable transport solutions.
The six new electric trucks will join DSV’s road operations in South Africa, building on the company’s successful electric journey that began two years ago through a partnership with a leading South African retailer.
Ralton Moses, Vice President for DSV Road, Sub-Saharan Africa, said: “With approximately 4,000 employees and nearly 2,000 vehicles supporting our road operations in South Africa, DSV plays a vital role in keeping supply chains flowing across a wide range of industries including food, healthcare, education, technology, banking, automotive, and retail. The addition of electric trucks marks an important step in our efforts to minimise our environmental impact.”
During operational trials at DSV, these new electric trucks demonstrated an average energy consumption of 0.8 to 2.1 kw/h, with a maximum range of 322km on a charge. Their operational efficiency and reliability make them an ideal fit for DSV’s road business model and sustainability strategy.
“As we move toward decarbonising logistics, we reaffirm our commitment to sustainable operations and our responsibility to future generations,” Moses added. “From the installation of solar panels and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) at our major sites to electric mobility, we are excited about the opportunities our investments offer – not only for our company, but also for our customers, the communities we serve, and the environment. We are proud to lead the way and encourage other companies to adopt similar initiatives.”
This milestone aligns with DSV’s global commitment to the Science Based Targets initiative, which promotes ambitious climate action in the private sector. DSV has set a near-term goal to reduce direct emissions (Scope 1 and 2) by 50% and indirect emissions (Scope 3) by 30% by 2030, relative to its 2019 baseline, and is committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, in line with the Paris Agreement.
