Mining industry mourns the loss of veteran exec Peter Gillin
The mining and financial communities are mourning the passing of Peter Gillin, an executive whose decades-long career shaped several prominent companies. Gillin passed away on Friday, after facing health challenges.
Gillin served as a founding board member of Wheaton Precious Metals and as chairperson of Dundee Precious Metals. His career spanned more than 40 years in the mining and financial sectors, earning widespread recognition for his integrity, strategic insight, and steady leadership.
At Wheaton Precious Metals, Gillin was a board member for over two decades and held key roles, including chairperson of the compensation committee and member of the governance and sustainability and audit committees. He had previously announced his planned retirement ahead of Wheaton’s 2025 annual general meeting.
“As our longest serving director, Peter's unwavering integrity, strategic insight, and dedication were instrumental in building Wheaton into the company it is today,” said Wheaton president and CEO Randy Smallwood.
“He was not only a respected leader, but a trusted colleague and friend. On behalf of the board of directors, management, and staff, we extend our deepest condolences to Peter's family and loved ones during this difficult time.”
"Peter will be remembered not only for his outstanding professional contributions, but also for his wisdom, humour, and generous spirit," said Wheaton chairperson George Brack. "He will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of working with him."
In his 16 years at Dundee Precious Metals, Gillin was instrumental in guiding the company’s transformation into a midtier international gold producer with operations in Europe and South America. He joined the board in 2009, later serving as deputy chairperson before being appointed chair in 2022.
“We are deeply saddened by Peter’s passing,” said Dundee Precious Metals President and CEO David Rae. “His steady leadership and oversight as a director and chair over the years laid the foundation for our transformation into the responsible, growing precious metals producer we are today.”
“On a personal note, I will always remember not only his dedication and support for our success, but most importantly, his example of leading with our values,” Rae added.
Gillin also held past board roles with Sherritt International and served as chairperson of Turquoise Hill Resources. Before entering the mining industry, he built a successful career in investment banking.
In honour of Gillin’s legacy, Wheaton announced it will increase its contribution to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada to support ongoing research, prevention, and care.
Meanwhile, Dundee Precious Metals has named Juanita Montalvo as its new chairperson as part of its succession planning. A board member since 2017, Montalvo brings over 25 years of international experience in mining and extractive industries, with a background in strategic planning, governance, and large-scale industrial project development.
