Fire Safety Interview: How IFT is Revolutionising Mining Site Fire Safety
In an interview with Shantelle Alberts, Fire Specialist at Integrated Fire Technology (IFT) for fixed applications, we explore the steps the company is taking to enhance fire safety on mining sites. IFT, a South African leader in fire protection for the mining industry, is at the forefront of adopting advanced technologies to improve fire detection, suppression, and overall safety. Here, Shantelle shares insights into how IFT plans to implement key trends to keep mining operations safer than ever in 2025.
Q: Shantelle, thank you for joining us. Can you tell us about some exciting trends in fire safety IFT plans to implement in the mining industry?
Shantelle Alberts: At IFT, we’re very excited about the continued advancement of fire safety technologies. One of the most promising developments we’re embracing is the integration of smart fire detection and alarm systems. These systems use IoT technology to provide real-time monitoring of environmental conditions, detecting potential fire hazards before they’re visible to the human eye. On mining sites, where conditions can be hazardous and complex, early detection is key. These systems can identify a fire risk based on subtle changes in temperature, humidity, and airflow, giving us the ability to respond quickly, which ultimately saves lives and reduces damage to valuable assets.
Q: How do these smart systems work on a mining site?
Shantelle Alberts: Smart detection systems continuously monitor factors like temperature and airflow, predicting fire risks before they escalate. Mining sites are large and often have high-risk areas. By using predictive analytics, we can identify hazards early and respond quickly, reducing the chance of a disaster.
Q: IFT is also has a hybrid fire suppression systems offering. How do these work on mining sites?
Shantelle Alberts: Hybrid fire suppression systems are one of the most exciting advances we’re focusing on. These systems combine traditional water-based suppression with more advanced suppression agents like foam. The idea is to offer a more targeted and effective fire suppression solution, especially in environments with sensitive equipment, which are common in mining operations. A typical water-based system might not be ideal for areas like diesel and hazardous storage where water could cause more damage. By combining different agents, we can tailor the suppression to each area’s specific needs. This versatility also helps us minimise the collateral damage often caused by traditional water-based systems, especially in areas where equipment and systems are at risk of being compromised.
Q: How do you ensure these hybrid systems are effective in mining operations?
Shantelle Alberts: We design systems based on each site’s specific needs. For sensitive areas like hazardous storage, foams are used, while water is better for other areas. By collaborating with clients, we ensure the right suppression methods are used in the right places to ensure maximum effectiveness.
Q: Foam suppression systems are a key focus for IFT. How do foam systems benefit diesel storage on mining sites?
Shantelle Alberts: Foam suppression systems are ideal for diesel storage because they create a blanket over the fuel, cooling it and cutting off the oxygen supply, effectively extinguishing the fire. Diesel fires are difficult to control, but foam quickly suppresses flames and prevents re-ignition. It’s far more effective than water, which could worsen the situation.
Q: What impact do you see foam systems having on fire safety in mining?
Shantelle Alberts: Foam systems will become essential in fire safety, especially as more mines increase their use of diesel. These systems reduce fire risks and minimise downtime, which is crucial for maintaining smooth operations. Foam’s ability to prevent re-ignition and extinguish fires quickly will save lives, reduce damage, and improve overall safety culture in mining.
Thank you for sharing your insights. It’s clear that foam systems will play a big role in fire safety moving forward.
Integrated Fire Technology (IFT) is leading the way in fire safety for mining with foam-based fire suppression systems, particularly in high-risk areas like diesel storage. These systems offer efficient fire suppression while minimising damage and protecting lives. By customising solutions to each site’s needs, IFT is improving fire safety standards and helping create safer, more resilient mining operations.
With the growing use of diesel in mining, foam suppression systems will reduce fire risks, enhance safety, and help ensure smoother, more efficient mining operations. IFT’s commitment to integrating these advanced technologies demonstrates their leadership in fire protection for the mining sector.
