Top women (and male allies) in mining share insights, solutions and strategies

The 4th Annual Women & Leadership in Mining Conference organised by women owned business, Pinpoint Stewards will take place on 27 and 28 August at the Indaba Hotel, Johannesburg. 

Ankia Roux, co-founder of Pinpoint Stewards says: “The most significant piece of legislation creating access to women in mining, is the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act (MPRDA).  Now it is up to industry to implement and excel transformation since stats show numbers have not been reached ”

It is reported that today, more than 70 000 women are active participants in the SA mining industry increasing from 11 000 in 2002.   Empowering women over the next 5 years, is the theme for this year’s conference and this platform hopes to bring efforts together to achieve this through purposeful planning and effective strategies.

She adds: “Orchestrating the will to empower more women to attend, is conference partners Implats and Wood and we welcome more such empowerment partners on board.  The conference will include 11 targeted industry case studies from major mining stakeholders, who will focus on industry best practices to empower women and grow equity, speakers will share key leadership traits and opportunities available to women in the sector.” 

Each year the organisers select a new panel of speakers, to gain a well-rounded understanding of leadership rather than highlighting only well-known and established leaders.  Delegates will hear from and meet these inspiring speakers, who will share their vision in shaping the future of mining. 

Some of the speakers include:

Bontle Mtshengu, GM Mining Aftermarket Support, CUMMINS SOUTH AFRICA, will tackle, transforming the culture of women and men in coexisting and embracing change.

Nakedi Leah Memela, Principal Engineer: Asset Management, SERITI, will discuss managing assets, time and your career while influencing positive change in your place of work.

Looking at where to start in entering the mineral value chain and discussing ways in equipping women with bankable business plans, access to funding, clear market access and information to business skills will be Lufuno Mbedzi, Project Manager, VALTERRA PLATINUM MINE.

Maleka Mohulatsi, Senior Project Manager, WOOD will give key tips in mapping your career path and look at where you are heading.

Marcia Mashigwane, Mine Geologist – Magnetite Projects, FOSKOR will share how to help other women rise – regardless of their background.

Other notable speakers include:  Dr Bogosi Moagi, Executive Group Health Services, IMPLATS, Nosipho Damasane, Chair, RBCT, Babsie Crane, VP: Chrome and Base Metals, SIBANYE STILLWATER, Nkanyezi Luthuli, Group Procurement, Team Lead, GLENCORE Operations SA, Ferroalloys Division, Kutlwano Takadi, Head: Transformation, Regulatory & WIM KUMBA IRON ORE, Dr Urishanie Govender, Chief Sustainability Officer, HARMONY GOLD MINING COMPANY LTD.

Experts guest speakers include: Dr Gustav Gous, Certified Speaking Professional & Leadership Coach  will be speaking on self-leadership vs team-leadership.  Dr Annamare Wolmarans, Founder, Atlega Institute will moderate the open forum discussion on: setting boundaries to mental strength, GBV - Harassment, Bullying and Victimization and bridging the pay gap etc.  Mark Grobbelaar, Founder, INpowered will share knowledge and a skill that can help you in a threatening situation- more than just self-defence.

To enable more women to attend the conference and expand team engagements, delegates are encouraged to register before 23 July for discounted rates.   To be part of the solution, (in closing the gap) Pinpoint Stewards each year, invite 10 post-graduate students to attend the conference to find a mentor, job shadowing opportunity or career in mining. With funding generated from sponsors and delegate support the organisers are also able to donate a percentage of profits to one of their beneficiaries.
