A cyberattack rocked operations at container terminals operated by Transnet Port Terminals in late July, causing fresh backlogs that had also developed during recent civil unrest and looting in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng. Transnet was forced to declare force majeure at its container terminals in Durban, Ngqura, Gqeberha and Cape Town (pictured), following “an act of cyberattack, security intrusion and sabotage”. The disruptions came amid the peak of the citrus export season and once again brought into question South Africa’s so-called “gateway to Africa” status. Photograph: Reuters
