Strata Worldwide’s South African operations head office is situated just outside Johannesburg, providing the company with a strong presence in the African mining industry.

The company’s journey in Africa began over 14 years ago when it introduced proximity detection and collision avoidance technologies into South Africa's coal mining industry. Since then, Strata has become a leader in this market in both South Africa and Botswana and has built strong and trustworthy relationships with customers over the years.

Strata South Africa manufactures 90% of its products locally, which provides two major benefits for customers. Firstly, it offers shorter lead times and secondly, it protects against currency fluctuations. Strata has a dedicated team of 210 employees, mostly technicians, who work across the country under service-level agreements to provide maintenance and mandatory checks for customers.

HazardAVERT® collision avoidance systems (CAS) are currently installed in over 20 mines, on over 2 500 vehicles and protecting more than 24 000 miners every day.

South Africa is fortunate to have many hard rock mines including platinum group metals, manganese and zinc mines. Collision avoidance systems are now mandatory on both electrical and diesel equipment, in underground and surface mines. Strata now offers a new, second-generation hard rock mining product with advanced capabilities in safety. Currently, the company is working on a project at a remote manganese mine, where it is ensuring the safety of over 3 000 people and 700 pieces of equipment daily.

The South African mining market is fundamental to the organisation and was the first in the world to adopt the rigorous ISO 21815 collision avoidance protocol. This protocol is expected to become a global requirement soon. Strata has adapted its product line to meet this standard and has implemented it into various mining markets to meet customers' expectations.

Strata is set to exhibit at the Electra Mining 2024 event in September, with a stand located in Hall 5, number F17. The company will showcase its well-established HazardAVERT electromagnetic proximity detection and collision avoidance system, as well as introduce a new GPS-based surface system through a new business partnership.

In addition to its electronic safety offerings, Strata will also highlight its range of networking options for underground communication, tracking, monitoring and automation at the event.
