Gladstone Power Station JV lodges potential 2029 closure notice
The Gladstone Power Station (GPS) Joint Venture has confirmed that CS Energy has formally notified the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) of the potential retirement of the coal-fired facility in March 2029, coinciding with the expiry of existing supply and operational arrangements.
The proposed closure is six years earlier than previously expected.
The notice, lodged under the National Electricity Rules, satisfies the requirement for generators to provide at least 3.5 years’ advance closure notice. The JV stressed, however, that no final decision has been made to shut the power station, which has been in operation since 1976, and the life of the facility could yet be extended depending on market and other factors.
There is no immediate impact on current operations, with existing power supply contracts – including those with Boyne Smelters – to continue until their scheduled expiry in March 2029.
“The JV participants recognise the contribution of GPS to the Gladstone community and are committed to work with the operator, NRG Gladstone Operating Services, to ensure transparent and timely engagement with employees, contractors and suppliers throughout this process,” the venture said.
Between now and March 2029, the partners will engage with stakeholders on energy market developments and potential options for future use of the site.
GPS is an unincorporated JV in which Rio Tinto holds a 42.125% stake.
Notification to AEMO was made by CS Energy, the nominated generator for GPS in the National Energy Market, which trades the output of the power station in excess of Boyne Smelter’s requirements.
