Glencore confirmed it held preliminary discussions with Rio Tinto Group on a possible combination of some of their businesses, including an all-share merger that would create the world’s biggest mining company.

There’s no certainty of a deal, Glencore said in its statement, adding that a further announcement will be made as appropriate.

The deal was under discussion as recently as this week, the Financial Times reported earlier Thursday, citing people familiar with the matter that it didn’t identify. A full combination of Rio Tinto and Glencore was one of the options under discussion, although the exact contours of a potential deal couldn’t be determined, the FT said.

Rio Tinto declined comment.
