Last week’s Junior Indaba was a clear indication the South African government and its mining industry have still not found a single direction in which to pull together – and it is absolutely essential for economic growth and job creation that they do so.

After talking in public and in private over such a long time, it is inexcusable that the South African economy is still being deprived of getting the best outcome from its substantial minerals endowment. There is no time to start from scratch again. The Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources simply has to show a greater sense of urgency and the industry is extremely equipped to help it to get over the line.
