Name of the Project
Graphite processing facility.

Location
US.

Project Owner/s
Urbix.

Project Description
Urbix plans to use its proprietary technology to build and operate a commercial-scale graphite processing facility, which will sustainably produce coated spherical purified graphite (CSPG), a key material for lithium-ion
batteries.

The planned facility will receive high-quality natural graphite concentrate feed from Graphcoa, a graphite producer owned by Appian.

The facility will have the capacity to produce about 10 000 t/y of CSPG and will help reduce reliance on foreign sources, such as China, which currently dominates the global market.

Potential Job Creation
The facility is expected to create 200 full-time jobs and 300 direct construction jobs while incorporating a community benefits plan focused on workforce development, STEM – or science, technology, engineering, and mathematics – career opportunities, and impactful employee benefits.

Net Present Value/Internal Rate of Return
Not specified.

Capital Expenditure
Urbix was selected by the US Department of Energy’s Office of Manufacturing and Energy Supply Chains in September 2024 to enter into final negotiations for up to $125-million in funding.
