GRID-LOCKED

A lack of investment into South Africa’s grid over the past number of decades is at last being recognised as a major constraint to the integration of much-needed new generation, such as the wind projects left stranded during a recent procurement round. Efforts are belatedly being made to navigate the immediate limitation by directing developers to areas of grid capacity and by accepting that a certain level of curtailment is required. In the end, though, it is all about accelerating the build programme and here, too, Eskom is making some important initial strides.
