The recent cyberattack on Transnet, which paralysed operations at the country’s ports only days after deadly rioting did likewise, was yet another warning of just how vulnerable the country’s economic infrastructure is to cyber-crime. All companies, but especially South Africa’s utilities, will have to prioritise cyber-defence investment as the risk of ransomware attacks and cyber-terrorism grows by the day.
