Name of the Project
Hurricane Creek Mining – Mine 2 project.
Location
Bryson mountain, in the US state of Tennessee.
Project Owner/s
Coal miner Hurricane Creek Mining (HCM).
Project Description
The proposed mine site was mined at various times, from the 1950s to 2010.
The company plans to recover coal from the Poplar Lick, Sterling and Stray seams.
There are up to six Stray seams, two Sterling seams and two Poplar Lick seams in the permit area ranging in thickness from less than 30 cm to more than 122 cm.
HCM proposes to operate a surface coal mine and reclamation operation using auger, highwall and contour methods. Auger/highwall methods extract coal by drilling horizontal holes into the exposed coal outcrops along highwalls using rotary shafts and hydraulic rams.
Surface contour mining removes coal from the side of the mountain, following the coal along the contour and moving around the mountain. The project has a five-year mine life, producing 360 000 t/y of coal and a total production of 1.8-million tons, with about ten years allowed to complete mining and reclamation liabilities.
Potential Job Creation
About 24 people will have direct employment with HCM over the life of the project.
