US-based precious metals miner i-80 Gold has appointed seasoned gold executive Richard Young as its new CEO, following the retirement of former CEO Ewan Downie.

The appointment completes the previously announced succession plan, with chairperson Ron Clayton expressing gratitude for Downie’s vision and leadership in building the company.

Clayton also voiced the board’s excitement over securing a leader of Young’s experience and skills. “Richard is well-equipped to lead our team in unlocking the value our assets represent,” he said.

Young brings extensive financial, development, and operational expertise to i-80, having held senior roles in multiple companies over several decades. His experience includes operational leadership in Nevada, notably at Barrick Gold’s Goldstrike mine.

He was also the founder and CEO of Teranga Gold, playing a key role in its transformation from a single asset producer into a successful low-cost, mid-tier gold producer that was ultimately acquired by Endeavour Mining in 2021 for more than C$2.5-billion.

Most recently, Young served as president and CEO of Argonaut Gold which was acquired by Alamos Gold in July.

Reflecting on his retirement, Downie expressed pride in the platform he helped establish at i-80. “As the company transitions from exploration to mine development, it is time for a leader with broad development and operational experience to guide i-80 through its next phase of growth, delivering significant returns to shareholders.”
