JSE-listed Impala Platinum (Implats) expects to report an improvement in basic earnings per share (BEPS) for the year ended June 30, but warns that headline earnings per share (HEPS) are expected to be lower, primarily owing to the adverse impact of lower sales volumes and inflation on earnings, while the revenue per ruthenium, rhodium, palladium, osmium, iridium and platinum (6E) ounce sold remains flat.

Headline earnings and HEPS for the period are expected to decrease by between 63% and 79% year-on-year.

Both headline and basic earnings are expected to be between R500-million and R900-million, while BEPS and HEPS are expected to be between 56c apiece and 100c.

In the prior period, the group reported headline earnings of R2.4-billion, HEPS of 269c, a basic loss of R17.3-billion and a basic loss a share of 1 929c.

Basic earnings in the prior period were significantly impacted on by impairments of R19.8-billion, equivalent to 2 204c apiece (post-tax).

The weighted average number of shares in issue for the period increased to 897.45-million from 897.36-million in the prior period.

Implats will release its results for the period on August 28.

The company’s operations are on the Bushveld Complex in South Africa, the Great Dyke in Zimbabwe and the Canadian Shield.
