Integrated Fire Technology: Revolutionising lithium-ion fire protection
In recent years, the rapid proliferation of lithium-ion batteries has brought about a corresponding increase in concerns regarding fire safety. To address this pressing issue, Integrated Fire Technology has introduced AF-X Fireblocker, a cutting-edge solution designed to revolutionise lithium-ion fire protection across sub-Saharan Africa and Europe. In a recent interview, Integrated Fire Technology spokesperson Shantelle Alberts, provided valuable insights into the capabilities and significance of AF-X Fireblocker.
AF-X Fireblocker stands out as an aerosol generating fixed fire extinguisher that meets the extreme demands required for fire suppression of lithium-ion battery storage facilities. Its innovative design allows for the swift release of an aerosol compound upon activation, which reacts with and neutralises free radicals, the primary instigators of lithium-ion battery fires. The dry compound used in AF-X Nano generators is potassium-based, ensuring rapid binding with unstable oxygen and hydrogen radicals to form stable particles.
One of the key advantages of AF-X Fireblocker lies in its ability to extinguish fires without depleting ambient oxygen levels, a common concern with traditional extinguishing agents. This feature, coupled with the benign nature of the resulting potassium carbonate, makes AF-X Fireblocker a safe and effective choice for lithium-ion battery fire protection.
Moreover, AF-X Fireblocker has received rigorous international certifications, including the KIWA BRL-K21045 SCP05 Specific Certification Program 05 for Fire Protection of Lithium-ion Battery Storage. These certifications validate the system's performance across five critical phases of the safety chain, ensuring its effectiveness in containing and extinguishing lithium-ion battery fires.
Preventing re-ignition is a significant challenge in lithium-ion battery fire protection, and AF-X Fireblocker addresses this issue with its ultrafine potassium-based particles. These particles, measuring less than 2 ppm in size, remain suspended in the protected environment for at least 30 minutes, effectively inhibiting any resurgence of fire.
AF-X Fireblocker's versatility extends beyond standalone battery storage facilities, making it suitable for integration into various applications, including data centres, electric vehicles and renewable energy installations. Its adaptability and effectiveness make it the go-to solution for safeguarding critical infrastructure against lithium-ion battery fires.
Looking ahead, as the demand for lithium-ion batteries continues to rise globally, AF-X Fireblocker is poised to play a crucial role in enhancing safety standards. With its advanced technology, international certifications, and proven performance, AF-X Fireblocker represents a significant advancement in lithium-ion battery fire protection, ensuring the safe and sustainable adoption of this vital energy source.
AF-X Fireblocker stands as a beacon of innovation in the field of fire safety, offering a potent combination of advanced technology and reliable performance. As Alberts states, “it represents a significant step forward in ensuring the safe and secure utilisation of lithium-ion energy, enhancing safety standards on a global scale.”
