Katanning gold project gains priority status under new WA approvals programme

The Western Australian government has selected Ausgold's Katanning gold project (KGP) to participate in its newly established Priority Approvals Programme, streamlining the project’s permitting pathway.

The programme, led by the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation, is designed to coordinate the assessment of projects deemed significant to the state’s development by facilitating cross-agency processing through a single case manager.

Ausgold said the KGP’s inclusion reflects its potential to enhance and diversify the Great Southern economy. The project, located on predominantly cleared, freehold land, carries relatively low technical risk.

The company this week also lodged a Section 38 Environmental Protection Act referral with the state’s Environmental Protection Authority.

At the federal level, the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) is assessing the project under an Assessment on Preliminary Documentation, one of the department’s lower-level, less complex assessment categories. The DCCEEW has requested additional fauna surveys in surrounding areas to inform mitigation planning, with Ausgold expecting to respond in the first quarter of 2026.

Ausgold GM for permitting and approvals, Troy Collie, said the company welcomed the project’s selection for the Priority Approvals Programme.

“We are extremely pleased to have been invited into WA’s Priority Approvals Programme. This is an important initiative, and we applaud the government of Western Australia for the introduction of cross-sectoral facilitation to expedite processing of applications,” he said.

He added that the new measure, combined with progress on federal approvals, supported Ausgold’s target of making a final investment decision in the June quarter of 2026.
