Australia-listed Lindian Resources has kicked off early-stage site works at its Kangankunde rare earths project in Malawi.

The company said on Friday that civil and infrastructure development was under way, following the February start of a new 5-km access road. The early works form part of a broader strategy to accelerate Stage 1 construction and reduce project risk.

The completed scope so far includes processing plant and product storage areas, equipment laydown zones, and management offices and security yards. The access road, meanwhile, is ahead of schedule and on track for completion in the second quarter.

“The initiation of these projects showcases Lindian’s dedication to progressing Kangankunde with both urgency and a fresh perspective,” said Zac Komur, Lindian's chair of project delivery. “Through collaboration, best practice efficiencies and on-site management, the current road works are ahead of schedule... delivering pre-development time and significant cost savings.”

Lindian noted that the fast pace of road construction had allowed it to redeploy equipment and skilled workers to the early development works, resulting in cost and time benefits.

More than 70% of site-based roles were currently filled by local workers, the company said, with training and skills development programmes under way to expand the workforce and support regional economic development. Lindian was also working with local communities to create long-term opportunities through employment and procurement.
