PERTH (miningweekly.com) – ASX-listed Lion Energy has signed a heads of agreement (HoA) with the Port of Brisbane for its first green hydrogen hub.

Lion Energy will build and operate its first hydrogen generation and refuelling hub at the Port of Brisbane, with the hub geared towards heavy mobility fleets. Commissioning of the hub is expected in the first quarter of 2024, and the procurement of major equipment is already under way.

“The location at the Port of Brisbane is highly strategic due to its proximity to the majority of Brisbane’s 70-plus bus depots, and also the significant heavy vehicle traffic to and from the port,” said Lion Energy executive chairperson Tom Soulsby.

“Our site will initially produce and dispense some 420 kg green hydrogen a day, but with the ability to quickly double production to respond to increasing demand.

“We are proud to bring the first commercial-sized green hydrogen facility in Queensland in early 2024. Our project will immediately benefit the community by allowing bus companies to operate clean hydrogen buses in the Brisbane metro area. Our installation will also allow many other businesses to confidently trial various types of hydrogen vehicles in the near future, such as cement agitators, garbage trucks and all other heavy vehicles for which battery technology is inadequate,” said Soulsby.

The HoA is subject to contract and approval by the board of the Port of Brisbane, which Lion Energy is expecting to obtain by April.
