Local pumps manufacturer details successes
FIRED UP The Jenny and Varkie pump series have been flameproof certified for underground use in fiery mines
Submersible industrial pumps manufacturer Amandla Pumps manufactures and designs its pumps locally, enabling the company to meet specific customer demands.
The company has a state-of-the-art machining facility, equipped with computer numerical controlled equipment to accurately manufacture its products to high standards, with flexible turnaround times.
“With good relationships established with suppliers, we offer very good lead times on delivery. Amandla Pumps also has a well-equipped service centre to cater for the aftermarket,” says Amandla Pumps technical director Wayne de Mello Koch.
The company’s development department uses the latest technologies to create good-quality products to optimise its pumps and processes to reduce costs for customers.
Amandla Pumps is a proudly South African company which uses and uplifts local talent and partners with suppliers across the country.
Further, the company achieves a yearly growth of more than 30%, which Amandla Pumps MD Derek Parker attributes to the company’s ongoing product development, the rising demand for mining pumps and good management in terms of running a value-adding ISO 9001-accredited quality manufacturing system.
Pumps Ranges
Amandla Pumps’ Varkie S-Series horizontal submersible pumps, comprising a small, compact and portable unit designed for longer wear life, are well suited to applications in the mining industry.
Even when the water level drops below the top section of the pump, owing to the horizontal arrangement, the motor is partially submersed and is still cooled by the water.
The pumps are full vortex pumps, which reduces the amount of contact between the product and the impeller. Polyurethane linings further extend the wear life of various pump components.
De Mello Koch says the S-Series has been used successfully in local and international mining dredging projects, including for mining company Samancor, in the North West; for the Ambatovy mine, in Madagascar; and for a project in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Additionally, Amandla Pumps’ Jenny J-Series has proven successful for drainage applications in the local mining industry.
“Through performance, reliability and value for money, the J-Series is known as a reliable competitor, as it provides tailor-made solutions where standard units are not adequate.”
The J-Series has been used by platinum producer Impala Platinum, which used the specifically developed 60 Hz unit, called the Jenny J90H, for better flow and pressure.
He says the Jenny and Varkie pumps series have been flameproof-certified according to International Electrotechnical Commission System for Certification standards with high levels of protection against gases, vapours and dusts – Ex db | Mb.
This certifies the pumps for underground use in fiery mines – mines where there is methane gas – as the units are strong enough to contain an internal explosion.
De Mello Koch explains that there is a substantial market for flameproof equipment in South Africa.
Further, pumps supplied by Amandla Pumps are South African Development Community-approved, enabling mining companies to receive a financial benefit in terms of reduced or no import duties.
The company is also working to obtain further international accreditation, including European Conformity, or CE, and compliance, safety and accountability, or CSA, standards as per North American requirements.
“We aim to become the first-choice supplier to the local South African mining market using locally manufactured products, and to become the biggest submersible pumps manufacturer in the southern hemisphere,” concludes De Mello Koch.
