The economic effects of the 21-day lockdown are likely to be painful and long lasting. The monetary authorities have acted swiftly to increase liquidity, while the fiscal authorities have also made some initial accommodations and are likely to have to make even more. It’s premature to put a figure to the costs, but they are nevertheless going to be significant. In fact, we will likely be paying them off over many years, if not decades.
