From modest beginnings retrofitting farm tractors out of an apple orchard barn in Southern Georgian Bay, Ontario, to a multi-national corporate network of about 1 200 employees across four continents and six countries, the next chapters of underground mining equipment manufacturer MacLean’s mining innovation story are actively being written within the broad themes of the electrification, automation and digitalization of the global industry.

The constant across the shifting sands of time and geography is the MacLean commitment to pursuing engineered solutions that make the underground environment safer and more productive.

When it comes to MacLean in Africa, the company’s first-ever international branch was established in South Africa in the late 1990s, with Parys and Phalaborwa remaining the hub of MacLean’s mining vehicle manufacturing in-country, as well as the platform for the company’s service and site support across the continent.

“We have been successful to date in growing our fleet presence outside of our home base in South Africa and have already expanded into underground mining hubs in Southern, Eastern, Central and West Africa,” notes MacLean Africa GM John-Paul Theunissen.

He adds that the company’s recently announced service and support partnership with mining, construction and earth moving equipment supplier Kanu Equipment helps MacLean to expand its market reach as the company pursues a common objective to support safety and productivity across the African mining sector.
