Freeport Indonesia, majority-owned by the Indonesian government but operated by US mining giant Freeport McMoran.

Project Description
The project involves the construction of one of the world’s biggest copper smelters at Freeport’s existing refining operations, in Indonesia.

The refinery will have a capacity of 1.7-million tonnes of copper concentrate.

The new smelter will also have an output of 600 000 t of copper cathode and include a $200-million precious metal refinery with a capacity of up to 54 t.

Planned Start/End Date
Freeport Indonesia launched the copper smelter on June 27, 2024 and (?) is expected to produce its first copper cathode in August.

Latest Developments
Freeport has largely completed construction of its new Manyar smelter and has started commissioning operations. 

The company expects the smelter to produce copper cathodes in the coming months and continues to target full ramp-up by the end of 2024, in line with previous expectations.
