Project Description
The project involves the construction of one of the world’s biggest copper smelters at Freeport’s existing refining operations, in Indonesia.

The refinery will have a capacity of 1.7-million tonnes of copper concentrate.

The new smelter will also have an output of 600 000 t of copper cathode and include a $200-million precious metal refinery with a capacity of up to 54 t.

$3.7-billion.

Planned Start/End Date
Freeport Indonesia launched the copper smelter on June 27, 2024 and (?) is expected to produce its first copper cathode in August.

Latest Developments
Freeport Indonesia may be forced to suspend operations at the end of October, owing to a lack of copper concentrate, following a mud-flow incident at its Grasberg mine, according to media outlet Kontan, citing an energy ministry official.

The mud-flow disaster killed seven workers; operations at the Grasberg mine have been halted for nearly a month.

Grasberg may not return to its pre-accident operating rates until at least 2027, the company has said.

The $3.7-billion Manyar smelter resumed operations only in May after a fire broke out in October 2024 that damaged the plant.

Key Contracts, Suppliers and Consultants
Chiyoda (engineering, procurement and construction contract).
