South Africa- and UK-listed Marula Mining has found, in a revised mine plan for the Kinusi copper mine, in Tanzania, that it can produce 24 000 t/y of high-grade copper concentrate from a large conventional openpit development.

The plan also envisions a two-phase processing operation comprising a gravity concentrate, coarse jigging and fines dewatering circuit.

The first phase of the processing plant has a capital cost of R27-million, or £1.4-million, which Marula has available in undrawn funds.

The second phase will incorporate a hydrometallurgy fines optimised heap leaching circuit, and a copper solvent extraction and electrowinning refining operation to produce 10 200 t/y of copper cathode.

The board has approved the updated development plan for Kinusi, with final testwork for the Phase 1 plant to be completed in the fourth quarter.

Marula envisions commissioning of the Phase 1 processing plant late this year, or early next year.

In the meantime, openpit mine planning and initial mining activities will start before the end of the year, with the company planning to stockpile high-grade copper ore ahead of commissioning the processing plant.

Marula continues to explore on the property to increase confidence in the ten-million-tonne resource having been defined at Kinusi.
