To mark its centenary, celebrated virtually on June 30, the South African Reserve Bank issued a commemorative circulation R5 coin. Thecoin reflects the historical journey of the currency issued by theSARBover the past 100 years, from the iconic ‘tickey’ to the future ‘Cape honey bee’ 10c coin. The other images include the R1 ‘springbok’ gold coin, representing the introduction of the rand as South Africa’s official currency in 1961, the1965 ‘king protea’ 20c coin, depicting South Africa’s national flower, the 1990 ‘two sparrows’ 1c piece and the 2008 ‘Nelson Mandela’ R5 coin, which commemorated the former President’s 90th birthday.
