New gen ADTs eyed by opencast miners

NEW GEN DUMP TRUCKS A key selling point of the A50 ADT is its full hydraulic suspension
EFFICIENCY CHAMP Volvo CE reports that the A50 delivers 10% more productivity and 8% greater fuel efficiency than the A45G FS, while service costs drop by up to 6% over 12 000 hours
Following African equipment supplier Babcock Africa’s mid-year launch of new generation Volvo articulated dump trucks (ADTs) and excavators, opencast contract mining services company JCI Mining has taken delivery of the region’s first A50 ADT.
Based on lifecycle costing, JCI MD Matthew Abraham says the A50 hits “a sweet spot” with unmatched cost-per-tonne prospects.
JCI Mining – headquartered next door to Babcock’s Middleburg-based sales, parts and service dealership – became the first customer to receive an A50, quickly following with an order for ten more. Babcock’s Middleburg facility was also the location of the new equipment launch, which included the A40, A45 and the all-new A50-series of ADTs as well as a new range of excavators in the 21 t to 30 t class.
The A50 joins JCI’s existing fleet of A30, A40, A45 and A60 ADT units, with Abraham confirming that the machines will be deployed for overburden and coal hauling, with the decision driven by lifecycle cost analysis.
“On paper, the A50 offers the best cost-per-tonne and overall lifecycle costing,” he adds.
Babcock is the sole Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) distributor in Southern Africa, with Volvo CE reporting that the A50 delivers 10% more productivity and 8% greater fuel efficiency than the A45G FS, while service costs drop by up to 6% over 12 000 hours.
“This is the most significant update to our articulated hauler range in over 20 years,” says Babcock equipment division MD David Vaughan.
In addition, a key selling point of the A50 ADT is its full hydraulic suspension – the only machine of its size class with this feature. This system improves cycle times, boosts production and reduces vibration and maintenance costs.
Abraham highlights operator comfort as another major factor: “A comfortable operator ensures increased productivity and efficiency.”
Meanwhile, with heavy equipment, aftermarket service is critical. In this vein, Abraham praises Babcock’s reliability, saying that “downtime is the enemy, and service is everything”.
Service contracts are increasingly tailored to give customers maximum uptime and peace of mind, adds Vaughan.
More Opencast Applicability
For bulk earthworks, bulk materials handling and opencast mining services provider Zizwe Opencast Mining, one brand of ADT has been pivotal to its operational success – Volvo.
The Mpumalanga-based contractor, with operations in coal, chrome and platinum across South Africa’s Eastern and Western Bushveld regions, runs a 100% Volvo ADT fleet, supplied and supported by Babcock. This partnership has been formed over years of collaboration, with shared commitment to reliable equipment, efficient operations and responsive service.
Zizwe’s leadership team attended the mid-year ADT and excavator launch, with CEO Kobie Pruis saying the updated models align strongly with Zizwe’s operational priorities.
“The A50, in particular, hits a sweet spot for our operations. These trucks are designed to work harder, use less fuel and adapt to the future. That’s exactly what our industry needs,” he states.
Technology such as Volvo Co-Pilot and Terrain Memory gives machinery operators the tools to work smarter and protect machine life, while a newly designed cabin enhances comfort, safety and productivity during long shifts.
Efficiency is more than just an operational metric, notes Pruis, adding that it is a business imperative that reduces fuel use, cuts costs, lowers carbon emissions and supports sustainability targets. “Efficiency is paramount for us and for the mining industry as a whole,” he notes.
Behind the equipment is Babcock’s dedicated support network – a key part of the equation for Zizwe.
“Downtime is not an option in our industry. Babcock’s quick response, professional support and efficient logistics make all the difference,” says Pruis.
While the new generation ADTs are not yet part of Zizwe’s fleet, their performance potential has caught the company’s attention. With a proven history of delivering with Volvo equipment and Babcock’s service backing, Zizwe continues to look for ways to strengthen its capabilities for the decade ahead.
