The World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) is warning that the world’s average temperature is headed toward a rise of between three degrees and five degrees Celsius by the end of the century. The organisation’s findings indicated the international community is well off track in honouring the 2015 Paris Agreement, where commitments were made to limit the rise to 1.5 degrees relative to the start of the industrial revolution. “If we wanted to reach a 1.5 degree increase we would need to bend emissions and at the moment countries haven’t been following on their Paris pledges,” WMO Secretary General Petteri Taalas told reporters in Madrid, where countries met in early December for a two-week United Nations climate conference.
