Sakina Kamwendo: Well, it's that time again on a Friday when Update at Noon presents another update from At the Coalface with Martin Creamer, publishing editor of Engineering News and Mining Weekly.

Martin, a large wind farm is said to get the go ahead at the big South Deep gold mine, which is west of Johannesburg.

Martin Creamer: Yes, that's fantastic, and they found a lot of wind energy. They're now asking the government to give them the rights to go ahead with 60 MW or 80 MW of wind energy, and that they will add to the already substantial solar power, which is already helping to electrify that mine. So, it's a great move by Gold Fields, which owns the South Deep mine. It's a mechanised mine, it's very rich mine. It'd be great that they can cut the costs by generating their own clean, green wind and solar power.

Sakina Kamwendo: Martin, a major tender has been invited to hasten the development of the green hydrogen economy.

Martin Creamer: Yes, you know, this is incredible from the German organisation, GIZ. They are doing a lot in the green energy space, and particularly green hydrogen. So, they're finding that there are a few challenges in South Africa, and so they've invited tenders for people to come forward.

You will be service providers in exchanging information, exchanging all the study tour apparel that they can put out there to make sure that we can overcome the challenges of producing green hydrogen.

Sakina Kamwendo: Martin Creamer will be back with another edition of At the Coalface same time next Friday.
