To introduce the Megmeet laser welding cell – a solution that combines precision robotics with “cutting-edge” laser technology – robot manufacturer Yaskawa Southern Africa has partnered with equipment provider Industrial Manufacturing Systems South Africa (IMS-SA).

The fully integrated system will allow all welding parameters to be controlled directly from the robotic teach pendant, streamlining production and setting a new standard for automation in South Africa.

“The Megmeet laser welding cell represents a major step forward for local manufacturing. It’s one of the first solutions in its price range to offer full integration with the robot control system, meaning welding parameters can be adjusted on the fly,” says Yaskawa Southern Africa national project manager Devon Prinsloo.

Moreover, it will allow Southern African manufacturers to access “world-class technology” cost-effectively, helping them remain locally and globally competitive.

A key differentiator will be accessibility. While traditional robotic laser welding systems could cost in the tens of millions, making them unattainable for most businesses, the Megmeet laser welding cell, by contrast, delivers advanced capabilities at a “significantly more accessible investment level”, opening the door for medium-sized manufacturers.

Additionally, the collaboration will leverage Yaskawa’s expertise in robotic automation and motion control alongside IMS-SA’s role as a specialist integrator and technology supplier.

IMS-SA will also supply the safety enclosure and application engineering, with both companies providing ongoing technical support.

IMS-SA director Hannes Crouse explains that the system exists to give manufacturers reliable, locally supported automation systems that will improve productivity, while ensuring repeatable quality.



Further, by reducing reliance on scarce welding talent, improving throughput and lowering per-unit welding costs, the solution addresses many of the challenges affecting South African manufacturers. 

The partnership will also address concerns that are often raised around automation and job displacement. “Rather than reducing opportunities for human workers, the Megmeet laser welding cell creates new pathways for upskilling and career growth,” says IMS-SA.

The company notes that operators and technicians are trained to work alongside robotic systems, while higher production volumes help to create demand for additional roles upstream and downstream of the production pipeline.

Crouse adds that while some may see robotics as a threat to jobs, the reality is the opposite. “Higher throughput means more work at both the start and finish lines of production.”

Additionally, when coupled with upskilled operators, the technology creates a healthier, more sustainable employment landscape.
