Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan disagrees strongly with any winding down of South African Airways (SAA), which he says was never the original purpose of the business rescue process. Nevertheless, with South Africa’s fiscal resources stretched to breaking point as finance is redirected in support of the Covid-19 fight and to protect vulnerable employees, firms and citizens, is it really wise to set aside money to enable a ‘new SAA’ to rise from the ashes of the old?
