The Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) will, on behalf of the City of Johannesburg’s Transport Department, undertake a comprehensive review and update of the Sandton Integrated Transport Master Plan, which was adopted in 2013.

The 12-month review aims to assess progress made since the plan’s initial adoption and align strategic transport planning with Sandton’s evolving urban landscape.

Over the past decade, the city has upgraded pedestrian sidewalks, built two bridges over the M1 freeway to connect Sandton to Alexandra and prepared for the extension of Rea Vaya Bus Rapid Transit services into Sandton.

As part of the Rea Vaya construction, residents, businesses and commuters have been notified of temporary changes at Katherine street and Pybus road. Hazards include deep excavations, uneven walkways and heavy machinery, the JDA says.

Citizens are instructed to use only the designated, barricaded pedestrian crossing with flag personnel assistance, as crossing elsewhere is prohibited and dangerous, the agency warns in a statement.

Sandton remains Johannesburg’s key economic hub and the municipality is acting to support its growth with sustainable, efficient and inclusive transport solutions to meet rising development and travel demands.

The review will focus on the M1 highway connecting the Johannesburg central business district (CBD) to Midrand and Pretoria. It will also focus on Grayston drive, which provides access into the Sandton CBD and links the M1 to Sandton drive.

In the review, the JDA will also focus on Rivonia road, which links Rivonia to Rosebank through the Sandton CBD, as well as Winnie Mandela drive, which connects Rosebank, Sandton, Fourways and Randburg.
