Electronics manufacturer Schauenburg will be launching several new products in the gas detection environment and will also be scaling up its real-time solutions in collision awareness.

MD Lewis Mathieson explains that this is part of the company’s goal to develop solutions to not only keep people safe, but to advance productivity. As a result, the company has seen an expansion in the hard rock mining environment, which is a sector Mathieson says will attract renewed focus from Schauenburg.

“Schauenburg has a tagline that says, ‘innovation that saves’, which sees the company investing a lot of its own money into innovation, which subsequently saves lives and money,” Mathieson notes.

Wholly designed, developed and manufactured in South Africa, Schauenburg provides electronic health and safety products to the mining industry - mostly fire detection, gas detection and collision awareness.

“In terms of the Mining Charter, we fulfill the requirements for the 70% local content completely and it gives us a lot of flexibility, especially if we need to modify any of our products. This means that we don't have to wait six or eight weeks, as our engineers are situated at head office and can do it quickly,” Mathieson says of the company’s speedy turnaround.

The company has also deployed its SmartMine Internet-of-Things (IoT) platform, specifically for mining, which integrates all the mine’s operational sensors and provides real-time information to anybody and everybody who needs it, for example engineering or ventilation checks.

Commenting on the post-Covid environment, Mathieson is encouraged by the increased demand for Schauenburg’s products and services.

“We believe it goes along with the commodity prices that have certainly looked up post-Covid,” he concludes.
