South32’s Worsley Alumina earns ASI Performance Standard certification

The Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) has awarded South32’s Worsley Alumina the ASI Performance Standard V3 (2022) Certification, recognising the company’s sustainability achievements across its Boddington bauxite mine, Worsley Alumina refinery in Collie, and Bunbury port facility in Western Australia.

The certification, developed through a multi-stakeholder process, is a comprehensive voluntary sustainability standard for the aluminium value chain, addressing critical issues such as biodiversity, Indigenous Peoples' rights, circularity, and greenhouse-gas emissions.

Worsley Alumina’s facilities underwent an independent third-party audit conducted by KPMG Australia to confirm compliance with the standard’s 11 principles and 62 criteria under the environmental, social, and governance (ESG) pillars.

“The ASI Performance Standard V3 recognises Worsley Alumina’s performance against stringent ESG criteria, and Worsley is one of only a few alumina refineries in the world certified against this standard,” said Worsley Alumina VP for operations Pine Pienaar.

He added that this certification extends South32’s ASI certification across its aluminium value chain, with Mozal Aluminium, in Mozambique, also holding the certification.

“It is a testament to our hardworking team and our commitment to operating responsibly, leaving a positive legacy for future generations,” Pienaar stated.

The bauxite mined and alumina produced at Worsley Alumina are vital components in the production of aluminium.
