The humble hook-block is the star of this electric overhead crane, which Condra Cranes custom designed to specification for a metal refinery. The block’s electrically insulated square steel frame, suspended horizontally from the four rope pulleys shown, has five hooks for three applications. The primary application of the four identical hooks – seen bolted two to each side of the steel frame – is the removal of racks of cathodic plates from acid baths. The second and third applications – those of loading the plates on to trucks and performing routine plant maintenance – are carried out by the fifth centrally mounted hook of conventional swivel design.
