ASX-listed Syrah Resources said on Thursday that chairperson Jim Askew will retire from the company’s board of directors by December 31, after more than a decade of service.

Askew, who joined the board in November 2014, has led the company through a period of major transformation, including the development and commissioning of its flagship Balama graphite operation in Mozambique and the Vidalia active anode material facility in Louisiana, US.

Under his leadership, Syrah established itself as a key supplier of natural graphite and active anode materials to global markets.

“Jim’s deep operating experience and principled leadership have made him a highly valued chair and director, over long tenure, of multiple listed companies both in Australia and overseas,” said Syrah MD and CEO Shaun Verner. “His considered advice, indefatigable availability, and continued focus on doing what is right for long-term shareholder value have provided clarity and motivation to me and to the broader Syrah team for the past decade.”

Askew will remain chairperson while the company finalises the appointment of his successor. The transition process is being led by Lisa Bahash, chair of the remuneration, nomination and governance committee.

The company expects to announce the new chairperson in the coming months.

Separately, Syrah said it was in the final stages of appointing a new nonexecutive director,.
