Talga wins permit for graphite mine as Sweden dismisses appeals

ASX-listed Talga has cleared the final regulatory hurdle for its Nunasvaara South graphite mine in northern Sweden, after the national government dismissed all outstanding appeals against the exploitation concession granted by the Mining Inspectorate.

The decision confirms that the concession is now in force, positioning the company to advance its vertically integrated Vittangi anode project, comprising the Nunasvaara South mine and the fully permitted Luleå anode refinery.

“The permit success validates years of dedication. It reflects Talga’s rigorous environmental and operational planning, with over a decade of comprehensive studies, stakeholder engagement, and adherence to Sweden’s stringent regulations,” said founder and MD Mark Thompson in a statement.

“We are well-positioned to execute our strategy of delivering sustainable, high-performance anode materials to the global battery market.”

The Nunasvaara South operation hosts what Talga describes as Europe’s largest and highest-grade Joint Ore Reserve Commitee-compliant natural graphite resource. The associated refinery in Luleå is designed to produce 19 500 t/y of lithium-ion battery anode material, targeting electric vehicle, stationary energy storage, and defence markets.

“This milestone showcases Talga’s commitment to responsible resource development and the Swedish government’s positive decision means we now have all major permits in place for both the mine and refinery,” said CEO Martin Phillips. “We look forward to continuing to work cooperatively and collaboratively with our stakeholders through agreements in the future.”

Sweden’s Energy, Business and Industry Minister Ebba Busch welcomed the project’s progress. “Sweden has unique opportunities to be and remain a strong player in global mineral politics. We have the most sustainable mining industry in the world – ethically sustainable, environmentally sustainable, and with good working conditions. The graphite that Talga is planning to produce is a key material in battery manufacturing and the green transition to a fossil-fuel-free society.”

The final permit approval follows a string of strategic wins for Talga’s Vittangi anode project. These include a €70-million grant from the EU Innovation Fund, and designation as a strategic project under both the European Commission’s Critical Raw Materials Act and the Net-Zero Industry Act. The company’s mine environmental and Natura 2000 permits also entered into force late last year.
