Two security personnel and one civilian were killed in an attack by illegal miners at the Asanko gold mine, in Ghana, over the weekend.

The mine is a 50:50 joint venture between JSE-listed Gold Fields and TSX- and NYSE American-listed Galiano Gold, which is the operator of the mine.

Galiano reports that the deaths followed interaction between a group of illegal miners and contracted security officers on the Asanko mining lease, near the township of Tontokrom.

Given the distance between the processing plant and the mining leases to the south, operations at Asanko remain unaffected.

"Further investigations are ongoing and Galiano will continue to work closely with the local law enforcement agencies and relevant authorities to ensure the safety of our employees and community members," Galiano states.
