JSE-listed coal miner Thungela Resources has advised that both its headline earnings per share (HEPS) and earnings per share (EPS) for the six months ended June 30 will be between R7.42 and R8.12 lower year-on-year.

Following a decrease of between 78% and 85% in earnings year-on-year, Thungela expects earnings attributable to the shareholders of the group to be between R180-million and R280-million.

EPS will be between R1.40 and R2.10 apiece, compared with EPS of R9.52 in the first half of 2024.

HEPS will also be between R1.40 and R2.10 apiece, compared with HEPS of R9.52 in the prior comparable period.

Thungela attributes the lower earnings to challenging market conditions in the six months under review, as well as restructuring costs of R285-million having been incurred as the Goedehoop and Isibonelo operations reach the end of their mine lives this year.

The company will release its interim financial results on or about August 18.
