British naturalist Sir David Attenborough has emerged as the voice of conscience – and hope – as humanity hurtles ever deeper into a self-induced climate crisis, with existential consequences. Delivering an impassioned speech during the opening ceremony of COP26 in Glasgow, Scotland, on November 1, the 95-year-old broadcaster said: “In my lifetime I've witnessed a terrible decline. In yours, you could and should witness a wonderful recovery.” He added that humanity had it within its power to "turn tragedy into triumph". Photograph: Jeff J Mitchell for Reuters
