Gemstone miner Gemfields has confirmed the death of two police officers at its Montepuez Ruby Mining (MRM) operation, in Mozambique, earlier this week.

The company explains that about 40 illegal miners had marched on the mine gate and attacked police officers on duty. This resulted in the death of two of the police officers, one of whom was a commander of Mozambique's Natural Resources Protection Force.

No MRM employees or contractors were injured in the attack and on-site conditions have been calm since, the company points out.

As previously disclosed, in recent weeks, the operation of MRM's new processing plant, in the final commissioning process, has been impacted on by illegal miners sabotaging the plant supply infrastructure.

Gemfields and MRM continue to engage with the appropriate Mozambican governmental authorities and remain committed to the safety and security of its employees, contractors and host communities.

Last month, a police officer was also killed at titanium minerals miner Kenmare Resources' Moma mine, in Mozambique. Kenmare reported at the time that the police officer had been on guard at the mine's water pumpstation when he was attacked, adding that the incident appeared to have been motivated by the theft of the electrical cable that feeds the pumpstation.
