Location
Western Australia’s Pilbara region.

Project Owner/s
The Robe River Joint Venture comprising Rio Tinto (53%), Mitsui Iron Ore (33%) and Nippon Steel (14%).

Project Description
The project is part of Rio Tinto’s replacement projects underpinning ongoing commitment to the Pilbara, with combined capacity of about 130-million tonnes a year. It will develop new iron-ore deposits in the West Angelas hub, maintaining it 35-million tonne a year production, using existing West Angelas processing infrastructure. It includes the construction of new nonprocess infrastructure precincts and 22 km of haul roads. Ore will be autonomously trucked to the hub.

Potential Job Creation
About 600 jobs will be created during construction. Once operational, the project will help sustain a workforce of about 950 full-time equivalent roles at the West Angelas hub.

Capital Expenditure
$733-million.

Planned Start/End Date
First ore is scheduled for 2027.
