Western Yilgarn restarts activities at bauxite project in Darling Range
ASX-listed Western Yilgarn said on Thursday it had started work on a mineral resource estimate (MRE) for its Julimar West bauxite project in the Darling Range region, about 90 km north-east of Perth.
The Julimar West bauxite project is situated within an area identified by the Geological Survey of Western Australia as having significant economic bauxite mineralisation potential. The region has been historically recognised for its bauxite resources, and past exploration activities, including surface sampling, drilling, and metallurgical testing, have demonstrated the project's viability.
Gallium, a strategic mineral commonly found in bauxite deposits and used in semiconductors, will also be assessed in future exploration programmes. Western Yilgarn aims to evaluate the potential for economic concentrations of gallium alongside bauxite.
We are very pleased to recommence activities at the Julimar West bauxite project, particularly given the potentially large-scale nature of the bauxite mineralisation, bauxite prices hitting new record highs and current global supply constraints for bauxite. This represents an opportunity for Western Yilgarn to leverage the fact that we potentially have a significant bauxite project within the globally recognised Darling Range bauxite region in Western Australia," said chairperson Peter Lewis.
The project is expected to have the potential to host a substantial bauxite resource of sufficient quality and size to support medium to large-scale supply to established alumina refineries. However, the company has stressed that there is no certainty that the ongoing work will lead to an economically recoverable bauxite MRE.
Western Yilgarn's current work will focus on completing the maiden 2012 Joint Ore Reserves Committee resource estimate based on previous exploration efforts, marking a step forward for the company in its bid to establish a significant presence in the bauxite sector.
