The School of Mining Engineering will be launching their second intake of this two-year modular programme developed in close collaboration with industry and aimed at filling a competency gap in the field of MRM. Participants who successfully complete the programme obtain a certificate of competency from the University of the Witwatersrand, in "Advanced Mineral Resource Management".

To apply for the programme, participants will be required to submit a copy of their National Senior Certificate (matric) as well as a CV detailing a minimum of two-years working experience in the mining sector.

The programme is also a stepping stone to a postgraduate qualification at the School of Mining Engineering and serves as an excellent opportunity to formally expand your knowledge base in mining engineering.

Modules are registered as individual short courses, allowing participants to register for those courses they wish to complete to enhance their career, and include:

  • MRM 1 - An Introduction to Mineral Resource Management
  • MRM 2 - The Role of the Mine Surveyor in the Value Chain
  • MRM 3 - The Role of the Mine Evaluator in MRM
  • MRM 4 - An introduction to Statistical Evaluation of Mineral Deposits
  • MRM 5 - Geological Orebody Modelling
  • MRM 6 - Basic Mine Design
  • MRM 7 - Mine Financial Valuation and Optimisation
  • MRM 8 - Mine to Mill Optimisation and Control
  • MRM 9 - Mining Methods
  • MRM 10 - Mathematics for Mineral Resource Management
  • MRM 11 - Business Planning Process
  • MRM 12 - Mine Project Planning and Control
  • MRM 13 - Introduction to MRM Systems and Applications
  • MRM 14 - Introduction to Geostatistical Methods in Mineral Evaluation
  • MRM 15 - Sampling Theory and Methods
  • MRM 16 - Technical and Legal Requirements in Mine Planning
  • MRM 19 - Optimisation and Planning of Open Pit and Underground Mines
  • MRM 21 - Project Report

Those participants registering for the full two-year programme will have to complete and pass all assessments on the following compulsory modules: MRM 1, MRM 10 & MRM 21 and a further six modules to obtain certification.

Participants may also apply for continuous professional development (CPD) points upon completing required modules.

About the School of Mining Engineering

The School of Mining Engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand is recognised as one of the largest mining engineering programmes in the world.

QS World University Rankings by Subject rated Wits School of Mining number 13 among the top mining schools in the world. We have one of the most successful growth rates of any of the engineering schools, consistently having an increase of students to its courses.

Our School takes pride in being one of the founding schools of the University of the Witwatersrand, and can trace our origins back to the Kimberley School of Mines. Throughout its existence the reputation of the School has been based on the quality of our graduates, many of whom have risen to hold senior positions in the South African Mining Industry and made significant contributions to its growth and technological development.

Mining is an excellent subject to study at university and as a course is more focused towards industry than other engineering subjects. This is of considerable benefit to students who have the chance to make valuable contacts in the industry before they graduate.

Today, Wits School of Mining hosts an ECSA-accredited first degree, internationally recognised higher degrees in Mining Engineering covering several specialist fields of study, several certificate programmes and hosts the Centre of Sustainability in Mining and Industry (CSMI).
